Environmental Engineering

Environmental engineering at TREK is about more than technical reports it’s about safeguarding people, ecosystems, and communities through thoughtful, effective solutions. Whether your project involves brownfield redevelopment, hazardous materials, water contamination, or environmental permitting, our team combines decades of experience with practical engineering and environmental principles to get it right on time and within budget.

How We Help

Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs)

Our ESAs help identify actual or potential sources of environmental liability—critical for due diligence and risk mitigation before property transactions. With decades of experience, we deliver unmatched thoroughness and quality.

Three ESA Phases:

  • Phase I – Non-intrusive review to identify potential contaminants and areas of concern.
  • Phase II – Sampling and analysis to confirm the presence or absence of contaminants.
  • Phase III – Assessment of confirmed impacts and development of risk management or remediation plans.
Remediation & Decommissioning

Our remedial action and risk management plans identify the best options to address contamination whether preparing a site for new development or safely decommissioning an existing one.

A remedial/risk management plan may include:

  • A written scope and objectives
  • Metrics for measuring success
  • Implementation schedule
  • Technical specifications and construction drawings
  • Class A cost estimates
  • Monitoring plan for post-remediation performance
  • Closure report with lab results, field actions, and ongoing requirements
Hazardous Materials

We identify and manage hazardous building materials, like asbestos, lead, mercury, PCBs, silica and assess mould and moisture risks. Early screening and careful sampling prevent these materials from becoming airborne during maintenance, renovation, or demolition, protecting people and keeping projects compliant.

Key Services:

  • Thorough site investigations for hazardous materials and mould
  • Abatement specifications and Class A cost estimates
  • Help selecting and retaining qualified abatement contractors
  • Site supervision during abatement and collection of pre-, during-, and post-abatement air and surface samples
  • Asbestos management plans and long-term monitoring recommendations
Environmental Impact Assessments

We examine current baseline environmental conditions at a proposed project site and evaluate the potential positive and negative effects from a proposed development, be they environmental, socioeconomic or health-related. They then propose measures to mitigate any potential negative effects. Various governments require EIAs as part of licensing processes to move projects forward.

Solid Waste Management

Building solid waste management facilities like landfills and waste transfer stations demands a great amount of professional knowledge and expertise.

Key Services:

  • Desktop studies to identify candidate sites based on government regulations
  • Subsurface investigations to confirm soil conditions
  • Comprehensive design of facility layout and systems
  • Long-term monitoring of the completed facility through sample collection and chemical analysis
Hydrogeologic Investigations

We assess groundwater quality, quantity, and sustainability for domestic, agricultural, or industrial use through a combination of chemical analysis and on-site testing.

Key Services:

  • Desktop studies to identify optimal groundwater development sites
  • Installation of monitoring wells and sample collection
  • Hydraulic conductivity testing to verify capacity for intended use
  • Recommendations on site selection, withdrawal systems, and sustainable extraction rates

Where We Work

Buildings

We help ensure new and existing structures comply with environmental regulations. Our services include environmental site assessments, hazardous materials testing, mould and moisture investigations, and remediation planning, protecting occupants and supporting safe construction or renovation projects.

Transportation Infrastructure

From highways and bridges to tunnels and interchanges, we assess and mitigate environmental risks such as soil contamination, erosion, and habitat impacts. Our expertise ensures that transportation projects meet regulatory requirements while minimizing ecological disruption.

Community Infrastructure

We support municipalities in water and wastewater treatment, flood protection, and utility projects. Our environmental services cover site assessments, remediation, monitoring, and risk management to ensure critical infrastructure operates safely and sustainably.

Energy

We provide environmental oversight for power generation, transmission, and distribution projects. Services include hydrogeologic investigations, contaminated site management, and compliance support for large-scale energy developments, including renewable and conventional energy sources.

Mining & Industrial

We help manage environmental risks in mining and industrial sites, including tailings management, hazardous materials, and site remediation. Our services ensure operational compliance, safe decommissioning, and sustainable management of soil, water, and materials.
