Water Resources

Water can be both a vital resource and a significant challenge in any project. At TREK, we provide practical, science-backed water management solutions that protect your investment, meet regulatory requirements, and support long-term sustainability. Whether your project faces flooding risk, drainage concerns, or the need to protect sensitive ecosystems, we deliver strategies tailored to your site and sector.

How We Help

Hydrologic Assessments

Detailed hydrologic assessments include a range of catchment areas from watershed scale for floodplain management to small local drainage areas for the design of bridges, culverts and drain infrastructure. Hydrologic analysis supports the design of water supply reservoirs (extreme event analysis), mine tailings ponds or storm retention basins.

Hydraulic Modeling

Accurate hydraulic modeling is critical for designing and assessing everything from small creeks to major rivers. Our expertise supports flood protection infrastructure, riverbank stabilization, bridge and culvert design, and hydraulic structures such as dams and gradient controls.

TREK’s hydrotechnical specialists create precise models to evaluate and design solutions tailored to each client’s water resource challenges.

Key Services:

  • Floodplain Modeling
  • Dam Safety & Dam Break Modeling
  • Transportation Infrastructure (Bridges, Culverts)
  • Drainage Infrastructure (Channels, Weirs, Level of Service Analysis)
  • Fish Passage / Fish Ladder Design
  • Stormwater Management (Drainage Plans & SWMM Model Development)
Bridges, Culverts & Hydraulic Structures

We specialize in the hydraulic design and assessment of new and replacement bridges, culverts, and other hydraulic structures. Our experience spans everything from small single-span bridges to large multi-span designs, concrete box culverts, large-diameter concrete and corrugated steel culverts, and gradient control structures.

Our hydrotechnical design services also include ice loading recommendations to ensure bridge piers and shoreline structures withstand both static and dynamic forces from ice sheets and floes.

Flood Protection

We provide expertise in analyzing and designing flood protection infrastructure for both extreme and typical hydrologic events. Our work includes flood modeling to predict inundation zones, along with the hydraulic design of new or upgraded structures such as dikes, gates, weirs, pumps, diversions, and erosion protection systems. We also offer geotechnical services to support the safe design and construction of flood protection measures.

Drainage Assessments

TREK can provide assessment and design of rural drainage infrastructure. Our services include coordinating necessary site surveys, estimation of runoff discharges, preparation of plan-profile drawings, the assessment of existing drainage capacity and detailing the required drainage upgrades in channels and piped conveyance infrastructure.

Environmental Protection

We design solutions to protect riparian environments, from riverbank and shoreline stabilization to erosion and sediment control at construction sites, bridge abutments, and culvert installations. Our approach applies industry best practices, provincial regulations, and client-specified standards to deliver effective results. We also ensure fish passage is preserved, navigability clearances are met, and aquatic habitats are assessed and protected with precision.

Where We Work

Buildings

From high-rise developments to industrial complexes, we design stormwater management systems, onsite drainage, and flood protection measures that safeguard structures and occupants. Our work includes modelling runoff, sizing retention and detention facilities, and integrating water systems into site designs.

Transportation Infrastructure

Highways, interchanges, bridges, and tunnels, we address water-related challenges like drainage, culvert and channel design, erosion control, and flood risk mitigation. Our hydraulic modelling ensures infrastructure remains resilient under both extreme and typical flow conditions.

Community Infrastructure

Water supply systems, sewer networks, flood protection, and treatment facilities — we plan, model, and design for efficiency, resilience, and compliance. Our expertise covers dikes, gates, weirs, pumps, diversions, and erosion protection to keep communities safe and functional.

Energy

From hydroelectric projects to cooling water intakes, we design and assess water systems for power generation, transmission, and distribution. Our work ensures water management infrastructure supports operational reliability while protecting natural resources.

Mining & Industrial

We deliver water management solutions for tailings storage facilities, process water systems, and site runoff control. Our designs help manage supply, mitigate flood risks, and ensure regulatory compliance in demanding operational environments.
